Dominica

Yearbook 2013

Dominica. According to Countryaah, Dominica's parliament elected Charles Savarin on September 30 as the country's president, a post that is essentially ceremonial. The week before the election, Savarin had left his post as minister responsible for national security, the labor market and immigration. He was elected by all 19 MPs present. The Opposition Party The United Workers' Party (UWP) boycotted the election, claiming that the nomination of a minister for the post of President is contrary to the Constitution and is a manifestation of "classical dictatorship". It was Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit who had nominated Savarin. Skerrit rejected the criticism, saying that the opposition had not presented any presidential candidate because they could not agree on a joint candidate.
