São Tomé and Príncipe. According to Countryaah, China is set to open a trading office in São Tomé and Príncipe, despite the fact that the African country has diplomatic relations with Taiwan. In November, China and São Tomé and Príncipe entered into an agreement on trade cooperation, which could, among other things, lead to China investing in the construction of a new deep-water port.

China severed relations with São Tomé and Príncipe in 1997 when the small island nation established diplomatic relations with Taiwan, which Beijing sees as part of China. The government of São Tomé and Príncipe believes that the country must be open to various cooperation, and it should have promised Taiwan that relations with China are purely economic and do not affect the diplomatic ties with Taiwan. One reason for China’s interest is that oil and gas have been found off the coast of São Tomé and Príncipe, in the oil-rich Guinea Bay.
