Allendale, New Jersey is a small town located within Bergen County. The area was first settled in the late 1600s and was known as New Milford Township. It was eventually renamed Allendale in 1894, after the Allendale family who owned a large portion of the land in the area.

The earliest settlers of Allendale were Dutch farmers from New Amsterdam, who arrived in 1695 and established a thriving agricultural community. In 1711, the first church was built – a Dutch Reformed Church – which still stands today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, Allendale served as an important supply depot for George Washington’s troops as they marched through New Jersey towards Philadelphia. During this time period, General Washington stayed at several local homes and churches while passing through Allendale. These homes are still standing today and are considered historical sites.

In 1871, the Pennsylvania Railroad constructed a line through Allendale linking it to Hoboken and making it easier for commuters to travel into New York City. This development brought more people to the area and helped spur economic growth. By 1900, there were two hotels, several stores, banks, churches and other businesses operating in town.

In 1903, Allendale became home to one of America’s first air mail routes when pilot Charles Hamilton flew between Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania and Hoboken via Allendale twice per week carrying mail from one place to another by plane for only $25 per flight!

Throughout its history, Allendale has remained a quiet suburban community with many residents commuting into nearby cities such as Hackensack or Manhattan for work or leisure activities. The population has grown steadily over time but remains small compared to its neighboring towns with just over 6500 residents according to 2019 estimates. Despite its size however it remains an attractive place to live due its excellent schools systems with high graduation rates and low crime rates making it an ideal location for families looking for safe place to raise their children or retire comfortably near NYC without sacrificing rural charm.
