History of Allenhurst, New Jersey

Allenhurst is a borough located in Monmouth County, New Jersey. The borough was incorporated in 1897 and was originally known as Elberon. It is situated along the Atlantic Ocean, making it an ideal location for tourists and beachgoers alike.

The area was first settled by European settlers in the late 17th century, and the town of Elberon was officially established in 1881. The town got its name from an early settler named Jacob Elbertson who had purchased land near the coast from Native Americans. During this time, Elberon became a popular summer resort for wealthy families from nearby cities such as New York City and Philadelphia due to its close proximity to the ocean and beachfront property.

In 1894, a group of wealthy investors purchased a large tract of land in Elberon, with plans to develop it into an exclusive seaside resort community. They changed the name of the town to Allenhurst after their leader, Charles Allen, and began constructing elaborate Victorian mansions along Ocean Avenue. They also built a private country club with a golf course, tennis courts, swimming pool, and other amenities for their guests’ enjoyment.

In 1897, Allenhurst officially became incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. The town continued to be popular among wealthy vacationers throughout the early 20th century but declined after World War II due to changing tastes and economic conditions. In recent years however Allenhurst has seen a resurgence in popularity thanks to its charming historic homes and close proximity to New York City.

Today, Allenhurst is home to nearly 1,500 residents who enjoy its small-town atmosphere surrounded by ocean vistas year-round. Though much has changed since its founding over 120 years ago, many of Allenhurst’s original Victorian homes still remain standing today alongside modern developments that offer luxury living on one of America’s most beautiful coastlines.
