History of Arlington, South Dakota

According to allcitycodes, Arlington, South Dakota is a small town located in Kingsbury County. It has a population of approximately 1,200 people and is situated just off the Big Sioux River. The town was founded in 1883 by a group of German immigrants who were looking for a place to settle and start farms. They named the town after the city of Arlington, Virginia, which had been home to many of the settlers’ relatives and friends. The first post office was opened in 1884 and soon after, the first school district was established.

In the early 1900s, Arlington began to grow rapidly as more people moved into town and businesses began to open up. The railroad came through town in 1910, bringing even more economic growth with it. This allowed for easier transportation of goods from other parts of South Dakota to Arlington. During this time period, many churches were built and new businesses such as banks and stores popped up all over the city. In 1912, an opera house was constructed that became a popular spot for entertainment among residents and visitors alike. With its convenient location on the Big Sioux River, Arlington also became a popular spot for fishing and hunting trips from all over South Dakota.
