Belize. In mid-April, Belize’s Supreme Court annulled all oil drilling agreements signed by the government between 2004 and 2007. According to Countryaah, the motivation was the government’s failure to properly take into account the environmental impact of offshore oil extraction and that foreign companies that received the extraction rights lacked expertise to avoid possible environmental damage.. Belize’s public opinion is strongly opposed to offshore oil drilling as it could pose a danger to Belize’s coral reefs and thus the country’s important income tourism sector.
